Uncovering Unconscious Bias in Practice
A 4-Week Reflective Supervision Program for Mental Health Professionals
How might unconscious bias influence the way we understand our clients, formulate their difficulties, make clinical decisions, and deliver psychological care?

Uncovering Unconscious Bias in Practice is a four-week, small-group supervision program designed to support provisional psychologists, registered psychologists and other mental health professionals to critically reflect on the assumptions and biases that can shape clinical practice.

Across four 90-minute online sessions, participants will explore unconscious bias through reflective discussion, clinical case examples and practical exercises, with an emphasis on translating insight into more responsive and equitable practice.

-
Week 1: Understanding Unconscious Bias in Clinical Practice: Explore how unconscious biases develop and how they can influence therapeutic relationships, clinical decision-making, assessment, formulation and intervention.
-
Week 2: Disability Bias and Ableism in Practice: Examine assumptions about disability, functioning, independence and quality of life, and consider how ableism and disability bias can influence psychological practice.
-
Week 3: Cultural Bias and Culturally Responsive Practice: Explore the influence of culture, identity, social context and practitioner assumptions on therapeutic practice, with a focus on cultural responsiveness and reflective awareness.
-
Week 4: From Awareness to Reflective Practice: Move beyond simply identifying bias to developing practical strategies for ongoing reflexivity. Participants will develop approaches for recognising, challenging and responding to bias within their own professional practice.
