Diversional Therapy

Diversional therapy, also referred to as Recreational Therapy, is a client centred practice recognising that leisure and recreational experiences are the right of all individuals.

Diversional therapy practitioners work with people of all ages and abilities to design and facilitate leisure and recreation programmes. Activities are designed to support, challenge and enhance the psychological, spiritual, social, emotional and physical wellbeing of individuals (Australian Recreational Therapy Association).

Our Diversional Therapist will assess your individual or group needs and develop a tailor-made leisure and health action plan in consultation with you. You may then wish to engage our Diversional Therapist to provide advice, support and staff training to help implement your programme. Recreational activities aim to grow self esteem and personal fulfilment.

Diversional Therapy in the Home.

The focus of our home support program is to support older people and people with disabilities to access recreational and social activities to support their physical and psycho-social wellbeing, and ultimately achieve positive health outcomes.

Our service is individualised to meet your specific needs. We achieve this by conducting an assessment in your home or in the community, based on your preference.

Our Diversional Therapist will meet with you and work with you to develop a leisure and health action plan to meet your personal goals. This could include light exercise programs, joining community groups or activities, reinvigorating your hobbies or taking on new endeavours to build new skills. You will exercise your choice and control and be the driver of your plan. We will be there to support you along the way. Your family or advocate can also be included in this planning process, upon your request.

Following the development of your leisure and health plan, you will have access to our friendly and highly experienced Recreational Support Assistants who can work with you for a specific time period, or on a more regular basis, to help you meet your goals. This can include providing social support in the home or the community, assisting with gentle exercise, join you for short walks in your local area,  or provide transport to community events and even accompany you during your activities and provide individual support.

Some of the activities our clients have enjoyed recently include joining a falls prevention program, regular walks to the local park with their support assistant, participating in tai chi, joining an art class, flower arranging, visiting a local cafe weekly with their support assistant, participating in cultural activities.

We are committed to providing accessible and inclusive services and this will be incorporated into your leisure and health plan and activities. We provide culturally responsive service for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and, where possible, provide Assistants who speak your language. Our Diversional Therapist and Recreational Assistants are trained in dementia care.
