A passion for physical fitness has paid big dividends for an aspiring young exercise physiologist from Caringbah.

Jay Gooch, 24, has been awarded the 2010 TAFE NSW State Medal for massage. However, the accolades did not stop there.

Mr Gooch was also named Sydney Institute's Service Skills Award winner, beating 25,000 other contenders from across the state.

He is now in the running for 2010 Sydney Institute Medal for being the top student across all courses, a hotly contested award chosen from among 70,000 students.

Since completing a four year degree at Wollongong University and a diploma in remedial massage at Sutherland College, Mr Gooch has started his own massage business at the Vital Health Care Centre in Sutherland

Getting the right health care mix was important, Mr Gooch said. "Using massage as the primary treatment, I include additional exercise advice when needed, to maximize the benefits the clients can get from the treatment to the right areas," he said. "Many people don't realize the importance of massage and the medical benefits it can have on the body."

Mr Gooch said he had a passion for people living a better quality life. "I combine remedial massage with exercise physiology and concentrate on offering the latest and most up to date treatments for my clients.
